The Super Legit Podcast
Guest Instructions
So you're joining the cast of Super Legit for a recording? Fantastic! We are so happy to have you, [guest name here]! We have a few basic technology requirements so all of the [insert clever pun name for guest's fanbase here] can hear you loud and clear, and the Super Legit crew can have a blast with the [insert our private nickname for guest] we know and love!
Recording Requirements:
- Headphones are 100% necessary, worn over both ears. Good wired headphones preferably, or, in a pinch, good earbuds. Some of the cheaper ones let a lot of audio out, which then gets picked up by the mic. The better the seal, the better the feel... of... the audio... that we produce... And wireless introduces latency which hurts the flow of the scenes and slows down editing.
- External, dedicated microphone, not the one built into your laptop or earbuds. Doesn't need to be crazy fancy, but we really want this show to sound as good as it can, so a quality mic is important to us and our listeners.
- The least echoey, least noisy room you can find in your home (or office, if you're better than us).
- We rely on StreamYard for video chat during our show (we don't distribute the video), and audio recording. It's a super simple web page that doesn't require any special software setup, but it does have its own requirements here, which we've summarized below for your ease of reading.
- A stable internet connection. At least 4Mbps+ download AND upload. If you have faster, tell Jett so he can exchange nerd cred with you. You can test your speed at Speedtest.
- Windows 10 or higher, or Mac OS 10.14 or higher. StreamYard supports mobile devices, but unless you have an amazing special mic for it (let us know if so for testing), the sound quality is too poor for our needs.
- A computer built in 2015+. Older just can't keep up with the requirements.
- 6GB+ of RAM. Web pages are hungry these days.
- 10GB+ of free disk space. StreamYard has to be able to cache the recording locally while it uploads it to the internet, so it requires a decent amount of free space for safety. This will free up after the recording is complete and everything's clear, but if you run out mid-recording, we lose the episode.
- Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Opera. No Safari or IE for you hold-outs. And don't use Incognito/Private modes, as they prevent files from caching.
If you have any difficulties with the above requirements, just reach out to us ASAP and we'll work with you to see if alternate arrangements can be made.
Testing:
As soon as possible, please visit this test link for StreamYard and make sure you're able to log in successfully, audio levels check out, and can see yourself on the camera. Let us know if you have any trouble and we'll schedule a session with you to figure out what's going on ahead of recording night.
Recording night:
We'll get you a dedicated StreamYard link for your specific recording. When you're ready to join us, just click that link, and you'll be brought into the session. We usually take the first 10 minutes or so resolving any technical issues, getting everyone up to speed, checking levels, and explaining the in-show mechanics. We usually record most of this before the official start of the show, and some may be used in the final recording. When the show itself comes to an end, we also leave the recording hot, because the crew's still hot, and we chat for a while after, some of which may get used in the after-credits portion of the podcast. Let us know if you have any precise time limitations and we'll happily work with you to get you out on time. Occasionally uploads take a while to finish from your device. We might ask you to leave your web browser open (feel free to turn off the mic and camera) to let the upload finish.
Promotion:
First off, while we obviously LOVE it when our guests promote the show, there's never an obligation. We know how awful that can be. Still, we'll make sure you have a link to your episode, and we also request a photo of you to use for our social media promotion of your episode. A professional-looking photo for the episode cover is requested (three-quarters or full-body works best for our layout, but anything that doesn't cut off the top of your head or sides of your body is also good), but outside of that, we'd also love non-headshots, as we like the aesthetic that goes with the more ridiculous and conversational side of our show. The more absurd or un-headshot-like, the better. We may pair it with an out-of-context quote of yours we pull from your episode and plaster it all over our pages. If you can send that along ASAP we'll be able to start promoting with it, well... ASAP.
Thank you for joining us on Super Legit! We can't wait to see your smiling face and hear the latest news about [guest's personal life event we saw on social media]!
